What is Ellanse (洢莲丝 “少女针”)?

Ellanse is a collagen stimulating filler that provides immediate and long lasting results. It is used to reverse facial aging and improve loose skin by restoring collagen and volume that has been lost due to the aging process. It is used to lift and sculpt areas of the face including the forehead, temples, cheeks, nasolabial fold and chin. In recent years it has been gaining popularity especially in the Chinese market, where it is known as 少女针 “young woman’s injection”. Unlike most other dermal fillers which contain hyaluronic acid and last for 9-12 months, Ellanse contains Polycaprolactone (PCL)- a potent collagen stimulator that promotes new collagen formation in the area of treatment, with long lasting results of over 24 months. The ideal candidate for Ellanse is someone who has had hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers before, liked the result and is seeking a treatment that is more long lasting.

How does Ellanse (洢莲丝 “少女针”) work?

Ellanse is a dermal filler that contains 30%  polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres suspended in a 70% Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier. The CMC gel provides an immediate but short-lived (8-12 weeks) volume restoration of the treated area, while the PCL microspheres break down over the next 8-12 weeks to stimulate collagen production in the skin to provide a natural and long-lasting (1-4 years) improvement in facial volume and skin quality.

The PCL microspheres in Ellanse have a unique property – they stimulate the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the preservation of skin structure and elasticity. Over time, as the PCL microspheres gradually break down, they trigger the body’s natural collagen production process. This collagen production helps to rejuvenate and restore the skin from within.

The collagen that is produced as a result of Ellanse treatment replaces the gel carrier, providing long-lasting improvements to the treated area. The combination of immediate volumization and ongoing collagen stimulation creates a natural and rejuvenated appearance.

Who is suitable for Ellanse (洢莲丝 “少女针”)?

Ellanse is suitable for clients who wish to look like their younger selves by reversing age related facial volume loss and skin laxity. Contraindications include major medical and dermatological disease, presence of permanent facial implant, active skin infection and pregnancy.

Why is Ellanse (洢莲丝 “少女针”) the Key to Facial Rejuvenation?

  • Ellanse has the unique ability to naturally regenerate volume in the skin that helps restore a youthful appearance.
  • The newly produced collagen helps to rejuvenate and restore the skin from within, leading to long-lasting results.
  • Ellanse combines immediate volumization with the ongoing stimulation of collagen production. By addressing both volume loss and collagen depletion, Ellanse offers comprehensive rejuvenation benefits.
  • Ellanse has gained approval from regulatory bodies such as the MHRA in the UK and the HSA in Singapore. This ensures that it meets stringent safety and efficacy standards, providing patients with confidence in its use for facial rejuvenation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go for Ellanse or Hyaluronic acid (HA) based fillers?

Ellanse delivers a long lasting result, making it more cost effective as compared to HA fillers. HA based fillers are recommended for delicate areas such as the lips and undereye. HA based fillers can be dissolved with the administration of hyaluronidase, while Ellanse cannot be dissolved. For clients undergoing a filler treatment for the first time, it is better to start with HA fillers. For clients who have had several treatments with HA fillers and are looking for a more lasting result, Ellanse would be a good option

Ellanse or Sculptra?

Both are collagen stimulators with several key differences- Ellanse contains PCL microspheres in CMC carrier gel while Sculptra contains Poly L Lactic Acid (PLLA), Ellanse only requires a single treatment while Sculptra requires 2-3 treatments, Ellanse gives an immediate result while Sculptra gives a delayed result (1-2 months later), Sculptra requires regular massage for 5 days after injection to reduce risk of nodule formation. Both can be used concurrently, Ellanse injected into the deeper layers and Sculptra being used more superficially for skin rejuvenation.

How many syringes do I need?

A typical client in their late 30s or 40s will need 4 to 8 syringes (each syringe contains 1cc of product) for full face rejuvenation. The treatment is highly customised to the individual after a detailed discussion.

Is Ellanse safe?

It has been approved for use by medical professionals by Singapore’s HSA and Europe’s CE Mark. Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) are classified as Generally Regarded As Safe substances due to their long history of use in medical implants such as sutures.

How much does Ellanse cost?

At Bay Aesthetics Clinic, the price of Ellanse is $1200 per 1ml syringe ala carte, $1100 per syringe (package of 4 syringes), $1000 per syringe (package of 8 syringes). Prices are nett, inclusive of GST.

What are the Benefits of Ellanse?

Ellanse restores a youthful appearance by providing immediate facial volume to areas which have been affected by age related volume loss such as the cheeks, temples, forehead and chin. It stimulates collagen to provide a long lasting and natural effect, with firming and tightening of the skin.

How does Ellanse differ from other dermal fillers?

The usual dermal filler contains Hyaluronic acid (HA)- which is a gel like substance. Ellanse is longer lasting than HA based dermal fillers and provides an improvement in skin quality from the collagen stimulation.

What areas can be treated with Ellanse?

Common treatment areas include the cheeks, laugh lines (nasolabial fold), chin, temple, forehead. Areas which cannot be treated include the nose and lips.

How long does the treatment take?

Usually less than 1 hour

Is the procedure painful?

Topical anaesthetic will be applied beforehand. In certain cases, local anaesthetic can also be injected to the treatment area.

Is there any downtime after the treatment?

There is no downtime and clients can resume normal activity right away. Expect mild swelling in the treated area for a few days.

How long do the results of Ellanse last?

18-24 months

Are there any side effects associated with Ellanse?

Yes, this treatment is not without risk and should be performed only by a licenced medical professional (ideally an experienced one!). There is a risk of vascular occlusion, infection, nodules and migration.

Can Ellanse be used in combination with other cosmetic treatments?

Yes, certain aesthetic treatments such as Hydrafacial or botox can be performed at the same time as Ellanse. Discuss with your provider to find out more.

Is Ellanse safe?

Ellanse has received approval for cosmetic use by Singapore’s HSA and Europe’s CE. The contents of ellanse- Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) are classified by US FDA as Generally Regarded as Safe

How do I prepare for an Ellanse treatment?

Have a detailed discussion with your doctor regarding your medical history, treatment expectations and potential risks. You may be advised to stop certain supplements that predispose to bruising such as fish oil, vitamin E and gingko.
