Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occuring substance in the skin and can be broken down via natural metabolic processes involving the enzyme hyaluronidase. Hyaluronic acid is also the main ingredient in dermal fillers, which are used in aesthetic medicine to add volume to the face, for a lifted and full appearance.

However, Hyaluronic acid gel filler treatments don’t always give a satisfactory cosmetic outcome and in rare instances may even cause a medical emergency when injected directly into a blood vessel. Overfilled faces, migrated filler and vascular occlusion from filler injection are scenarios in which hyaluronidase injections are required to dissolve filler.

Hyaluronidase injections work by breaking down the hyaluronic acid so the body can reabsorb it, rapidly breaking down hyaluronic acid gel filler into H20 (water) by the process of hydrolysis. Effects can be seen immediately with full results in 5-7 days.

Hyaluronidase injections do not work for permanent or semi-permanent fillers such as silicone or calcium hydroxyapatite.

People generally opt for hyaluronidase injections when they would like to reverse the effects of hyaluronic acid gel fillers. Common scenarios where clients request to dissolve their fillers include:

Overfilled Face Syndrome — Accumulation of excessive filler volumes causing an unnatural or fake look.

Is the treatment painful?

The procedure is well-tolerated, involving small needle injections similar to when fillers are done. Rest assured, topical and local anaesthesia can be used to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

How long is the procedure?

Treatment time takes about 15-30 minutes depending on complexity of the procedure and the area being treated.

When can I see results?

Results are almost immediate, within 24 to 48 hours. You may experience initial swelling which resolves after 2 to 3 days. Final results are seen 1 to 2 weeks after treatment.

What are the possible side effects/ Is there any downtime?

Patients can expect some redness, swelling and bruising at injection areas, which will resolve in a few days. Allergic reactions are rare. There is no downtime, and patients can resume normal activity right after their treatment session.
