The legacy Sciton BBL was launched in 2004 and soon became the “go-to” pulsed light device for most dermatologists and aesthetic doctors. Building upon the “Classic” Sciton BBL, came the BBL HERO (Broad Band Light High Energy Rapid Output), with a faster firing rate, 4Hz (vs 1Hz), allowing for smooth movement with continuous firing. The rapid firing rate allowed for better treatment coverage, less risk of burns and was more comfortable. Other features of the BBL HERO include a contact cooling sapphire crystal (10degrees Celsius), multiple adapters- Full (15x45mm), Square (15x15mm), circle (11 or 13mm) and quick change filters- 420nm, 515nm, 560nm, 590nm (ST), 640nnm, 695nm (ST), 800 nm(ST).

The SkinTyte handpiece on the Sciton BBL HERO™ platform emits infrared light in the 800–1400 nm wavelength range, which penetrates into the dermal layer of the skin without damaging the surface. This light is absorbed by the water content in the skin tissue, converting into heat and raising the temperature of the targeted area.
2. Thermal Heating of the Dermis
As the dermal collagen matrix is gently heated, the controlled thermal injury triggers a wound-healing cascade:
Immediate collagen contraction: The existing collagen fibres shrink slightly upon heating, leading to a subtle immediate tightening effect.
Fibroblast stimulation: Thermal injury activates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, two proteins critical for skin structure and elasticity.
Neo-collagenesis: Over time (typically weeks to months), fibroblasts lay down new collagen fibres, enhancing dermal thickness, improving skin firmness, and smoothing out lax or crepey skin.
