What is MOXI Laser?

MOXI Laser is a US FDA approved treatment developed and trademarked by Sciton Inc (Palo Alto, California, USA). This 1927nm diode fractional non ablative laser delivers targeted laser energy to address a wide range of skin concerns, including ageing skin, fine lines, pigmentation, melasma, sun damage and dull skin. Enthusiasts of MOXI Laser treatments include celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, who recently shared her experience with the treatment1

How does MOXI Laser work?

MOXI is a 1927nm diode fractional non ablative laser that targets the water in the skin layer (Figure 1). It works by creating numerous microscopic areas of controlled injury in the skin, which triggers a rejuvenating wound healing process that causes the skin to generate new collagen and shed unwanted pigment. (Figure 2) This results in smoother, radiant and firmer skin. This treatment can be performed in all skin types (including darker skin tones), all year round and is safe and effective for melasma2,3.

The treatment is highly customisable and has 3 levels of intensity.

Level 1 treatment – a light “prejuvenation” treatment, suitable for a younger client (age 20-30) seeking to refresh the skin. No numbing cream is required and there is no downtime

Level 2 treatment – a moderate intensity treatment to revitalise and maintain, suitable for clients with more significant skin concerns. Numbing cream is recommended and skin will take 3-5 days to recover.

Level 3 treatment – a high intensity treatment that transforms and renew, for clients who have experienced a level 2 treatment before and are able to tolerate a longer downtime. Numbing cream is recommended and the skin will take 5-7 days to recover.

By using specialized transducers, Ulthera can precisely direct ultrasound energy to specific depths beneath the skin—namely, 4.5mm, 3mm, and 1.5mm. Focusing energy into concentrated points within the thermal coagulation zones allows temperatures under the skin to surpass 60°C.

This elevated temperature initiates a process known as neo-collagenesis in the targeted area, stimulating the production of new collagen, and reduced skin laxity, resulting in a firmer and more youthful appearance.

At 1.5mm

The focus at 1.5mm targets the dermis, addressing more superficial layers and areas with thinner skin, such as the forehead and temples. This effectively addresses fine lines and tightens the skin on the dermis.

At 3.0mm

The focus at 3.0mm transducers address the deep layers of the dermis, targeting the skin structure to stimulate collagen growth. Additionally, at this depth, it also targets fat.

At 4.5mm

The magic of lifting takes place at a depth of 4.5mm. Using the 4.5mm transducer, the physician can precisely target and treat the Subcutaneous Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS) layer. The SMAS is a crucial fibrous network comprising muscle, collagen, and elastic fibres—the very layer targeted by plastic surgeons during a surgical facelift.

Ultherapy®‘s visualisation allows safe and effective treatment by avoiding bone and blood vessels.

Clinicians can create a personalized treatment plan tailored to an individual’s skin anatomy. Variations in factors such as fat layer thickness among patients necessitate the utilization of distinct transducers for varying depths.

Frequently Asked Questions

The MOXI Laser treatment takes 30-45minutes, depending on the body area treated. A typical treatment course would be monthly sessions for 3 months, followed by maintenance treatments every 2-3 months
At Level 1, there is no downtime. At level 2 and 3, skin will be mildly red and tight for 2-3 days, similar to a mild sunburn. For days 3-7, the skin feels like sandpaper and may flake gently, as new collagen is being produced to renew the skin. A week after treatment, the skin appears refreshed and glowing.
Clients are advised to avoid sun exposure for a week and to use post laser recovery skincare. Retinols, AHAs/BHAs and Vitamin C serums should be stopped for 3 days prior and 7 days after a treatment.
Clients with open wounds should defer the treatment
