Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant is a permanent treatment for baldness due to androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss). Healthy hair grafts are obtained from donor areas at the back and side of the head and transplanted to areas of hair loss such as the frontal hairline or the crown area. This restores the appearance of a full head of hair to improve the self-confidence of the patient. A Hair Transplant is indicated when medical treatments for hair loss have been unsuccessful.
Prior to the procedure, patients will undergo a medical examination including blood tests. The procedure takes between 4-8 hours depending on the number of grafts required and complexity. An injection of local anaesthetic will be given and patients typically find the procedure painless. After the procedure, a dressing is applied, which is removed the next day.
It is best to set aside 3-5 days to recover at home after the procedure, although office work is possible. The scalp can be washed 5-7 days after the procedure. Patients can resume sports and swimming 2 weeks after the procedure. It is possible to resume herbal scalp treatments and hair treatments (eg dyeing) 2-3 months after the procedure.
Hair transplants can be performed to address hair loss at the eyebrows, to give a fuller beard and to camouflage large scars on the scalp
The transplanted hair follicles take 3-6 months to grow out, with the final result seen in 6-12 months.
