In this article, we will delve into the world of hair loss treatment in Singapore, exploring the various options and therapies. Discover how you can take control of your hair loss journey and restore your hair to its former glory with these advanced treatments.

Common hair loss conditions which patients seek treatment for are: Androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium and hair loss secondary to medical conditions or medications.

Androgenetic alopecia

Figure 1

Figure 2

Referring to male and female pattern hair loss, is a progressive condition that affects over 50% of the population by age 50. The causes are multifactorial- including genetics, hormones and ageing.

Male pattern hair loss is characterised by receding of the frontal hairline and balding of the crown area- this is graded clinically using the Norwood Hamilton scale. (figure 1) Females pattern hair loss typically presents with thinning of the hair along the parting and is graded with the Ludwig scale (figure 2).

Progression of hair loss is variable but typically takes months to years. Early to moderate stages of hair loss is reversible with treatment such as topical sprays and oral medications. Advanced stages no longer respond to medications and require hair transplantation surgery.

Telogen effluvium

An acute hair loss condition caused by a major stressful event- examples include childbirth, trauma, medical illness, COVID and emotional stress. A large proportion of hairs on the scalp enter the “dormant phase” known as Telogen, with hairs dropping out in large clumps.

This typically lasts for 3-6 months, with the patient’s hair appearing noticeably thinner. While distressing, this condition is usually temporary and the hair follicles typically resume normal growth after 6 months.

Medical Conditions or Medications Leading to Hair Loss

Hair loss can also be secondary to a wide range of medical conditions and medications- nutritional deficiencies such as iron or folate deficiency, rapid weight loss, hypothyroidism may present with hair loss. Use of certain medications, such as antidepressants, immunosuppressants or chemotherapy drugs, may affect the function of the hair follicles and lead to hair loss.

Hair loss is a medical condition and individuals suffering from hair loss should consult a qualified medical professional. A detailed hair loss consultation should include a systematic review of the individual’s hair loss history, medical conditions, current and previous medications, nutritional status, family history of hair loss and previous treatments for hair loss.

This is followed by a physical examination to grade the severity of hair loss, as well as a trichoscopic examination where a specialised equipment is used to examine the hair follicles under magnification. Blood tests may be suggested if hair loss is suspected to be due to a medical condition or nutritional deficiency.

Once an accurate diagnosis is reached, a personalised treatment plan will be recommended. Medications are usually advised- including topical minoxidil sprays and hair growth supplements containing essential nutrients. The limitation of these treatments include: side effects from medication including loss of libido and erectile dysfunction in men.

Calecim Advanced Hair System (AHS)

The latest development in hair loss therapeutics would be the use of stem cell derived growth factors and exosomes to promote hair growth. Calecim Advanced Hair System (AHS) is a Mesenchymal stem cell growth factor serum that is used for the treatment of hair loss in men and women. It contains multiple growth factors and cytokines- including Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), Transforming Growth Factor (TGF), Insulinlike Growth Factor (IGF) and Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF).

These growth factors promote hair growth by acting on the hair follicle to increase blood supply and cell proliferation (activity of hair growth), prolong anagen (hair growth phase) and conversion from telogen to anagen (dormant hair follicles become active again).

The recommended treatment protocol involves weekly treatments with Calecim AHS for 6-12 sessions (depending on hair loss severity), with scalp microneedling and Low Level Laser Therapy. The treatment is effective for early to moderate male and female pattern hair loss as well as Telogen Effluvium, with results seen after 3 months. It is safe with no downtime, patients can resume normal activity right away. The treatment costs $3000 for 6 sessions and $5500 for 12 sessions.

Regenera Activa

An autologous stem cell and growth factor treatment that utilises the patient’s own stem cells and growth factors harvested from the scalp. This regenerative medicine treatment addresses hair loss by stimulating the patient’s existing hair follicles to grow hair shafts faster and thicker, while reducing hair loss.

This hair loss treatment in Singapore takes 30-45 minutes, starting with harvesting of scalp grafts from the back of the head of the patient. These grafts are passed through the Regenera Activa device which disaggregates the grafts and extracts the live stem cells and growth factors. Next, the extract is injected into the areas of hair loss- giving a boost to the dormant or poorly functioning hair follicles. The Regenera Activa treatment is effective for early to moderate male and female pattern hair loss as well as Telogen Effluvium, with results seen in 3 months. One treatment is recommended to be performed every 6-12 months. There is no downtime and patients can resume indoor activity right away. There are 4-6 small wounds at the back of the scalp behind the ear which heal in 3-5 days. Each treatment costs $3000.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair transplant

The solution for more advanced cases of hair loss. Healthy hair grafts are obtained from donor areas at the back and side of the head and transplanted to areas of hair loss such as the frontal hairline or the crown area. This restores the appearance of a full head of hair to improve the self-confidence of the patient.

The procedure takes between 4-8 hours depending on the number of grafts required and complexity. It is best to set aside 3-5 days to recover at home after the procedure, although office work is possible. The scalp can be washed 5-7 days after the procedure. Patients can resume sports and swimming 2 weeks after the procedure. The transplanted hair follicles take 3-6 months to grow out, with the final result seen in 6-12 months. The cost of the treatment starts from $5000, depending on the number of grafts required.
