Hyaluronic acid fillers and Collagen biostimulators are both dermal fillers used to restore volume, smooth out wrinkles and enhance facial features. Locally approved brands of HA fillers include: Juvederm, Teosyal, Restylane, Belotero. Locally approved brands of collagen biostimulators include: Ellanse, Sculptra, Radiesse.
There are some differences between the Hyaluronic acid fillers and Collagen biostimulators which need to be taken into account when picking a treatment:
Composition : Hyaluronic acid fillers are made from a naturally occurring substance found in the body, while Collagen biostimulators contain Polycaprolactone (Ellanse) or Poly L Lactic Acid (Sculptra) or Calcium Hydroxyapatite (Radiesse)- products which stimulate the production of collagen.
Duration : Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last between 6-18 months, depending on the product used and the area treated, while Collagen Biostimulators can last over 2 years or more due to its collagen-stimulating properties.
Results : Hyaluronic acid fillers provide immediate results that are visible right after the injection, while Collagen biostimulators requires time for the collagen to be stimulated and the final result is not fully visible until after a few weeks.
Reversibility : Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, while collagen biostimulators cannot be dissolved.
Cost : Hyaluronic acid fillers typically cost slightly less than Collagen biostimulators
The choice between hyaluronic acid fillers and collagen biostimulators depends on the patient's individual needs and goals. A consultation with a experienced provider can help determine which treatment is best suited for you.
At Bay Aesthetics Clinic, Medical Director Dr Bernard Tan is an experienced injector who has experience with most of the filler and collagen biostimulator brands available locally. He will be able to discuss the various pros and cons of each particular product and recommend a suitable product based on the client’s requirements. Hyaluronic acid based fillers are typically recommended for first timers or for enhancement of sensitive areas such as the lips or undereye, while collagen biostimulators are recommended for clients who have had previous filler treatments and desire a longer lasting result.
