Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) versus Sculptra

Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) versus Sculptra – What is the difference?

Collagen bio-stimulation aka Collagen Banking is the current trend in Medical Aesthetics, Cosmetic Dermatology and Anti-Ageing Medicine. Collagen- the protein responsible for the skin’s youthful appearance, is lost at approximately 1% per year from the age of 25 onwards, accelerated by smoking, UV exposure and menopause. Collagen loss leads to visible signs of ageing such as droopy eyelids, sagging skin and wrinkles. Collagen Bio-Stimulators are injectable medications that stimulate the skin to produce new collagen to replenish depleted collagen levels.

The “original” Collagen Biostimulator, Sculptra needs no introduction. Each vial of Sculptra contains Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) 150mg, Sodium carboxymethycellulose (CMC) 90mg and mannitol 127mg. Sculptra is injected into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue to create a controlled inflammatory reaction and stimulates skin cells to produce collagen and elastin. Over time, the regenerated collagen results in improved skin quality, firmness and a gentle face lifting effect.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) has over 40 years history in medical use, and is currently being used for sutures and orthopaedic implants. This key ingredient has received approval from global health authorities for cosmetic use for over 20 years, where it is being used to treat age related skin laxity and volume loss on the face and body.

Lenisna (JuveLook Volume) contains 170mg of Poly-D-Lactic Acid (PDLLA) and 30mg of hyaluronic acid. Using a proprietary manufacturing technique, the molecules of Lenisna (JuveLook Volume) have a round structure with a porous center, as compared to Sculptra which has irregular edges. The uniform and porous round structure of Lenisna (JuveLook Volume) is believed to result in better results, less inflammation and lower risks of complications such as granulomas.

Sculptra PLLA vs Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) PDLLA- what is the difference?

PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic-Acid) and PDLLA (Poly-D-Lactic Acid) are molecular enantiomers. Isomers are molecules that have the same atoms (and hence the same formula) but differ in chemical and physical properties.  Molecular enantiomers are a specific kind of isomers where the molecules are mirror images of each other but cannot be superimposed, just like how the left and right hands are mirror images. Despite having identical atoms, molecular enantiomers can have significantly different physical and chemical properties.

Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) vs Sculptra- which is best for me?

Both Sculptra and Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) have similar mode of action, results and costs. There has not been a clinical study that directly compared the two products for results and safety. Sculptra has been on the market longer (>20 years!) with a large number of published clinical studies to support it’s safety and effectiveness. Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) is newer but has several features of the product claim to reduce the risk of adverse effects such as nodules and granulomas. Lenisna (Juvelook Volume) has been in use in Korea for 5 years and Europe for 3 years (where it has surged in popularity), recently gaining approval for use in Singapore.
