In Singapore, a large number of patients coming for aesthetic and laser treatment have darker skin tones— Malay, Indian or darker Chinese individuals are often Fitzpatrick types 4-6. Patients with darker skin types experience significant challenges, including pigmentation, melasma, acne scars and keloid scars.
Aesthetic and laser treatments for darker-skinned individuals carry a higher risk of complications. Inappropriate laser or energy-based device treatment settings can lead to burns, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma flare-ups and scarring.
That’s why aesthetic treatments for darker skin tones must be tailored and precise. At Bay Aesthetics Clinic, we are experienced in the treatment of patients with darker skin types and are able to achieve good outcomes safely.
The Fitzpatrick scale is a way doctors classify skin by the amount of melanin (pigment) and how it reacts to sun exposure. Skin Types 4, 5 and 6 include:

Darker skin types are more reactive to inflammation or trauma. Meaning? You’re more likely to develop hyperpigmentation (dark spots), melasma flare-ups, or even keloid scars if your skin isn’t treated properly.
Patients with darker skin often come to us with concerns like:
The concerns above are common across all skin types. However, if you have darker skin, your treatment will need to be performed with more care.
Here’s the issue: many lasers and energy-based devices were originally designed for lighter skin. Used improperly, they can cause more harm than good—leading to burns, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), white patches (hypopigmentation), or even permanent scarring.
That’s why at Bay Aesthetics Clinic, we tailor every treatment to your skin type—and avoid certain devices altogether when the risks outweigh the benefits.
Some treatments are not first-line choices for patients with darker skin tones. This doesn’t mean they’re completely off-l,imits but they need to be used carefully.
❌ BBL HERO – BBL HERO treatments carry a higher risk of burns in Fitzpatrick Types V and VI. The high-intensity pulsed light can also trigger melasma flare-ups.
❌ Fractional CO2 Lasers – Fractional CO2 resurfacing lasers for acne scars may cause hyperpigmentation and scarring when used at high settings in darker skin types
For these reasons, we rarely recommend them unless there’s a need for an aggressive solution, and always with careful pre- and post-treatment management.
Here are the treatments we regularly use for deeper skin tones based on their safety profiles:
MOXI is a non-ablative laser that targets water in the skin, not melanin—making it “color blind” and safe for all skin types. It helps improve uneven texture, dullness and pigmentation without risking burns or dark spots. MOXI Laser provides a safer and gentler approach to rejuvenation and resurfacing for patients with darker skin types.

Juvelook is a hybrid injectable skinbooster that combines hyaluronic acid with poly-D, L-lactic acid (PDLLA), which stimulates collagen production. Delivered via micro-injector gun, Juvelook skinbooster hydrates deeply, improves acne scars, brightens dull skin and smooths fine lines over time, without risk of hyperpigmentation or scarring.

Unlike lasers, subcision works for deep acne scars by using a needle or cannula to release fibrotic scar tissue. Subcision can treat rolling or tethered acne scars without triggering hyperpigmentation in darker skin types.

Ultherapy Prime uses focused ultrasound to tighten deeper layers of the skin, without heating the surface. It’s ideal for firming the jawline, cheeks or neck without pigmentation risks.
Oligio uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to gently stimulate collagen and tighten skin. It works well for early sagging or skin laxity—especially when you want results without downtime or side effects.

BotoxFace and Botox Jaw (Masseter) are safe for darker skin types. Botox injections treat muscles without affecting pigment, making it safe for patients of all skin tones. Whether it’s softening facial expression lines or slimming the jaw, Botox can help restore a fresh, youthful look in patients with darker skin types.
Accutane is a prescription medication that helps control oil production, shrink pores and treat severe acne. It's effective across all skin types and can help reduce the chances of long-term pigmentation and scarring.
For painful, under-the-skin cysts, steroid injections can quickly reduce swelling and stop scarring before it starts. It's a quick in-clinic treatment we offer for sudden acne breakouts. Steroid injections for acne in darker skin types carry the risk of hypopigmentation (which is reversible).
SecretDUO is a hybrid 2-in-1 treatment that combines radiofrequency (RF) microneedling and a non-ablative erbium glass Fractional laser. This treatment is safe and effective for acne scars, skin tightening and rejuvenation, with low downtime and minimal risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring.
