The Different Types of Dark Eye Circles and How to Treat Each One

Share:

TL;DR

  • The right treatment for your dark eye circles will depend on what caused them.
  • You can’t completely remove dark eye circles, but non-surgical procedures and topical creams can help brighten them.

Dark eye circles are one of those features that make you look tired even when you feel well-rested. The frustrating part? They’re not always caused by lack of sleep, and that’s why at-home treatments rarely work.

Some circles come from skin pigment, others from hollows or thinning skin, and each needs a different plan. Which type do you have, and what actually helps? Read on to find out.

Clinic-Based Treatments for Different Types of Dark Circles

Under-eye circles can look similar on the surface, but they actually vary in type. This is mainly due to the various factors that contribute to their development.

Common Causes of Dark Eye Circles:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Tear through hollowing
  • Vascular congestion (visible blood vessels)
  • Thinning, ageing skin

Not sure what’s causing your dark eye circles? Book an assessment at Bay Aesthetics to find out.

If Your Circles Are Caused by Hyperpigmentation

Brown or grey-toned circles are often due to periorbital hyperpigmentation, or excess melanin in the thin skin under your eyes. This can be inherited, worsened by sun exposure, or triggered by habits like frequent eye rubbing from allergies.

Treatment Options:

  • PicoSure Laser - which delivers pulses of light that target melanin. This breaks the pigment into smaller fragments that your body can easily clear. Fractional lasers also stimulate collagen, which can improve skin texture.
  • Chemical peels - such as glycolic acid. These accelerate skin turnover, helping lighten surface pigmentation. Because the eyelid skin is delicate, doctors use lower strengths under careful monitoring.

Follow-up treatments and consistent sun protection are required to prevent the recurrence of dark eye circles.

If Shadows Come from Tear Trough Hollowing

It’s also possible that your skin isn’t as dark as it seems. It may look that way because light falls into a hollow groove beneath the eyes, called the tear trough. Hollowing becomes more noticeable with age as fat pads shrink and bone support diminishes. Though there are some people born with deeper tear troughs.

Treatment Options:

  • Undereye fillers involve the injection of hyaluronic acid-based gel dermal fillers to add volume beneath the skin, softening the hollow and reducing the shadow. Patients can see visible results immediately after the procedure, with effects lasting 9 to 12 months.
  • Purified collagen injections also involve an injection of purified collagen instead of hyaluronic acid gel. This offers a more natural-looking and subtle alternative, with immediate results. 1-2 months after the injection, the skin quality improves further with improved firmness and reduced fine lines.

If Blood Vessels Are Visible

Bluish or purplish circles usually mean vascular congestion, where blood vessels under thin skin are more visible. This kind of dark eye circles often look worse in the morning, when fluid collects around the eyes.

Treatment Options:

  • Vascular lasers specifically target haemoglobin in the blood, shrinking vessels so they show less through the skin.
  • Allergy treatments: nasal steroid sprays and antihistamines

If Skin Is Thinning from Collagen Loss

With age, the skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, making it thinner and less elastic. This leads to fine lines, a crepey appearance, and circles that look deeper because the skin reflects light unevenly.

Treatment Options:
Oligio RF Eye - Oligio RF treatment utilises Radiofrequency skin tightening, where a specialised eye treatment tip delivers radiofrequency heat into the skin to stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. Over time, the skin of the upper and lower eyelids becomes lifted and firmer.

If Surgery Is the Better Option

For severe cases with sagging skin or bulging fat pads, non-surgical treatments may not give enough improvement. That’s when doctors may discuss surgery.

Surgical Treatments:

  • Lower eyelid blepharoplasty, aka eyebag removal surger,y removes or repositions fat pads, trims excess skin, and tightens the eyelid. This directly addresses puffiness and folds that exaggerate dark eye circles.
  • Fat grafting uses fat from another body area to restore lost volume under the eyes. Sometimes done together with blepharoplasty, this option can provide longer-lasting correction.

Considering surgery? Book a consultation at Bay Aesthetics to discuss if procedures like blepharoplasty are right for you.

Adjunctive Topical Treatments

Topical treatments also play a role in correcting dark eye circles — either on their own for mild cases, or alongside in-clinic procedures. They can be prescribed or purchased over the counter.

Topical Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

  • Hydroquinone (prescription only): Reduces melanin production. Considered one of the most effective topical agents for pigment-related circles, but requires careful supervision because of potential irritation and rebound pigmentation.
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): Brightens skin and interferes with pigment formation, while protecting against UV-related damage.
  • Kojic acid, arbutin, niacinamide: These slow melanin production and can gradually even out tone.

Topical Treatments for Visible Blood Vessels

  • Caffeine: Constricts blood vessels and temporarily reduces swelling, so circles can look lighter in the short term.
  • Vitamin K: Supports healthy blood clotting and may help reduce visible bruising or pooling under the eyes.
  • Retinoids and peptides: By thickening the dermis over time, they may provide better coverage of underlying vessels, though improvements are subtle and gradual.

Topical Treatments for Hollows or Tear Troughs

  • Hydrating ingredients (like hyaluronic acid): These plump the skin’s surface slightly, offering mild, temporary improvement.
  • Peptides and retinol: May improve skin firmness and texture, which can soften the appearance of hollows, but they won’t change the underlying anatomy.

Why Consistency Matters

Topical treatments are not quick fixes for dark eye circles. Because they rely on natural skin turnover cycles, results will be gradual and depend on daily use. If you stop too early or switch products frequently, you’ll limit its effect.

Dermatologists often recommend combining a brightening agent in the morning (like vitamin C) with a regenerative one at night (like retinol), always layered with sunscreen.

Sun protection is non-negotiable. Without it, pigmentation treatments are much less effective.

Combination Approach for Ideal Results

Most people don’t have just one type of under-eye circle. You might have hyperpigmentation from sun exposure, a bit of tear trough hollowing with age, and thin skin that shows blood vessels, all happening at the same time. That’s why doctors rarely recommend a single “fix.”

Instead, dark eye circle treatment plans are usually customised to the individual:

  • Lasers are used to lighten pigmentation.
  • Fillers and collagen injections can smooth out hollows.
  • Radiofrequency treatments are used to tighten sagging skin.
  • Topical creams support and maintain the results in between visits.

By addressing each contributing factor, you’re more likely to see meaningful, lasting improvement.

A doctor’s role is to map out which combination makes sense for your skin type, lifestyle, and level of concern rather than applying the same treatment to everyone.

Expected Results & Realistic Timeline

One of the biggest misconceptions about dark eye circle treatments is that results become visible overnight. In reality, improvement is usually gradual and depends on both the cause and the treatment method.

  • Lasers and chemical peels: Results appear progressively after a few sessions, as pigment fades and skin renews.
  • Fillers: These give immediate results, but maintenance is needed once the product naturally breaks down (usually 9 to 12 months).
  • Radiofrequency skin tightening Results take 1-2 months and last for up to 12 months
  • Topicals: Require daily, consistent use for months before you notice subtle brightening or skin strengthening.
  • Surgery: Offers more dramatic, longer-term changes, but healing takes weeks, and outcomes vary by individual anatomy.

FAQs on Treatments for Dark Eye Circles

Can oversleeping reduce dark eye circles?

Oversleeping won’t reduce dark circles. While adequate rest can prevent circles from looking worse, sleeping too much will not address the underlying causes, such as hyperpigmentation, thin skin, or tear trough hollowing. In some people, oversleeping may even increase puffiness and make shadows look more noticeable.

What is the best treatment for dark eye circles?

The best treatment for dark circles depends on the cause. For example, hyperpigmentation may respond to lasers or brightening creams. A doctor usually recommends a combination for the best results.
