Laser Mole Removal

When Should You Remove a Mole?

Some moles are harmless and others evolve over time—in shape, colour or texture. Even if moles are not hazardous to your health, they can still irritate you and disrupt your daily activities. These are some common reasons our patients look to remove their moles:

  • Cosmetic “Don’t like the look”
  • Functional “Gets in the way”, e.g. Bleeds or is painful due to abrasion/shaving

Which Moles can be removed by Laser?

  • Flat moles with cosmetic concerns
  • Small, superficial raised moles
  • Skin tags on the neck, chest or underarms
  • Seborrheic keratoses

Moles that are very deep, large, recurrent or suggestive of skin cancer may require surgical mole removal instead. During your consultation, we will advise you on what’s appropriate for your particular mole shape and size, after identifying the type of skin lesion.

How Laser Mole Removal Works

Laser mole removal works through the targeted application of light energy. Here’s a breakdown of the different processes behind laser mole removal.

Mechanism of Action

An ablative CO2 laser is used for laser mole removal. The beams from the CO2 laser target the water molecules within the mole, causing it to vaporise without affecting the surrounding healthy skin.

Layer-by-Layer Treatment

The laser is designed to remove the mole in layers, allowing for a controlled and gradual approach. This layer-by-layer technique ensures that only the abnormal tissue is treated, significantly reducing the risk of damage to the surrounding skin.

Minimised Scarring

Unlike surgical methods that involve cutting and stitching, laser removal minimises trauma to the skin, leading to smaller and less visible scars. The scar after laser removal is round, as compared to the linear scar after surgical mole removal

Laser Mole Removal: Step-by-Step at Bay Aesthetics

1. Consultation & Medical Assessment

Our doctor evaluates the mole(s) clinically. If benign and suitable for laser, we will proceed with laser removal. If not, we will explore surgical excision or recommend further investigation.

2. Preparation & Numbing

The skin is cleansed, and a topical numbing cream or local anaesthesia is applied for comfort. This ensures a painless experience even for sensitive areas like the face or neck.

3. Laser Application

A precise laser beam is directed at the mole to vaporise the lesion. Most sessions take 10–20 minutes, depending on how many moles are treated.

4. Aftercare & Recovery

You may experience slight redness or scabbing at the treated site, which resolves over 7–10 days. We provide aftercare instructions and a protective ointment to aid skin healing.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

In many cases, one session is enough to remove small or superficial moles. However, laser mole removal has a slightly higher recurrence rate (i.e, mole grows back), and a second touch-up treatment may be required. If moles recur within 3 months of the initial treatment, the touch-up treatment is provided free of charge (fees are waived).

Risks & Side Effects

Laser mole removal is safe when performed by trained medical professionals. Side effects are rare but may include:

  • Mild redness or swelling
  • Crusting or scabbing for 5-7 days
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially in darker skin tones

Note: These risks apply to all laser procedures. To minimise complications, it’s important to have your treatment performed by a qualified doctor who has experience in using laser technology and tailoring procedures to the specific characteristics of your mole and skin type.

If you're unsure, don't worry — our doctor will advise on the best approach after examining your mole.

What Results Can You Expect After Laser Mole Removal?

Laser mole removal is designed to deliver a smoother skin appearance with minimal downtime and scarring. While individual results may vary depending on the type, size, and depth of the mole, many patients notice a visible improvement after one session, especially for superficial or flat moles.

However, due to regulations set by local health authorities, we are unable to display before-and-after treatment images on our website or marketing materials.

If you’re curious about what to expect, we encourage you to speak directly with our doctor during your consultation. Based on your skin type and mole characteristics, we will provide a realistic overview of likely outcomes and healing timelines. Your comfort, safety, and satisfaction are our priority.
